About the Chamber - History

The Lacombe Board of Trade, the forerunner of the present Lacombe and District Chamber of Commerce was an integral part of the development of the Lacombe area.

Early activities, as recounted in Lacombe the First Century, published the Lacombe and district of Commerce in 1982, centered on the building of roads, soliciting and encouraging industry and business, establishing an Experimental Agricultural station in Northern Alberta, and advertising the community through brochures and sponsoring tours of individual and groups.

Because of the importance of agriculture from the beginning of settlement, the Board of Trade encouraged all efforts to improve the lot of the farmers.  One of the fit acts passed was to foster and accomplish the establishment of the experimental farm in Lacombe.  This, however, was just the beginning as other initiatives included the establishment of The Creamery in 1904, the establishment of The Peacemaker Flour Mill in 1914.  From the beginning, the Lacombe Board of trade realized the importance of roads, a crucial requirement in attracting settlers and carrying on business throughout the district that had Lacombe as it’s hub.  Roads were a timeless refrain, appearing in the minutes of most of the minutes held in the early years.  This early concerns about roads and streets has continued, and alternate traffic patterns, parking areas and driving regulations are never completely set aside as situations are constantly changing.

The early history, from the first citizens meeting on April 26, 1904, to recent initiatives including the development of the new Website, sponsorship of the Home Garden & Leisure show and Celebrate Lacombe days have been aimed at improving the lifestyle of all residents through self improvement, self awareness and self empowerment.

A lot can be learned from understanding our grass roots that has led the Chamber through its many initiatives for over 100 years.  Today the board of directors is trying to rediscover this direction through team building initiatives and strategic planning and goal setting.  We will continue to strive for excellence and improvement in an ever-changing business and social environment.
