Lacombe Chamber takes on Municipal Policy
In the winter of 2017 and spring of 2018, the Lacombe & District Chamber of Commerce conducted a survey amongst the membership to learn where they wanted their newly elected council should focus.
We asked one question to keep the answers as candid and broad as possible; ‘What do you see as a priority for City Council over the next term?’
For the respondents who participated, 35% spoke directly to concerns with processes and administration at City Hall around licensing, permitting and the like. The Board of Directors took this feedback and instituted a Policy Committee to put some work into moving the needle on this issue.
Two Directors, along with Executive Director Monica Bartman began meeting to come up with a policy that would highlight the concerns and provide recommendations to council and administration so that the Chamber could be part of the solution.
The finished product is a Policy called ‘Efficiency and Consistency within Administrative Processes’ that was approved by the Chamber Board in August. At our request we were invited to present our work at the September 4th council meeting and welcomed the opportunity to share our input.
Within two weeks of that presentation, Bartman was meeting with city administration to further discuss the recommendations and learn what steps the city had taken and planned to take.
Currently, city staff are developing terms of reference for a Process Review Team that will look at the customer experience using tools such as customer service mapping. The Chamber will have a seat at this table and is looking forward to this partnership. In the meantime, administration has identified several land use bylaws that are cumbersome or unnecessary that they plan to amend or delete.
We will provide further updates as they become available. At this stage, the board is encouraged by the positive reception from council and administration and the timely manner they have begun working on this with us.
We encourage you to continue participating with us in conversation and surveys as we work with our members and with the city to make improvements where possible. Our staff and board of directors are available to you should you have concerns or ideas related to municipal policy and look forward to the progress we’ll achieve together.
